Look at her black eye. It amazes me that victims of physical violence who are mothers are treated like trash. I'll bet that many men who beat their partners also vilify welfare moms. I have just finished the 23 page article that goes into the history of welfare reform a bit more, as well as contains interviews with some wonderful women who are getting aid. I really found that there is much power when we poor mothers get together and talk, and we need to do it more. I'd really like to expand this project into a support/advocacy group for welfare moms. First, I am going to create a zine with writing and art by poor mothers, tips on navigating the system, some resources and a web site with a chat group. Then I will distribute the zine inside the welfare office. What do you think?Sloth Womynhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12334700336578451488noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7795917756493447584.post-72138243064497047082010-05-01T19:36:39.681-07:002010-05-01T19:36:39.681-07:00I came over via womanist musings and found this to...I came over via womanist musings and found this to be intensely powerful. Woman are ever the victims of patriarchy, whether its be regulating our sex and reproduction (which children's bodies are valued? white and wealthy of course...) or in the patriarchal system that prevents and denies a mother's right to f*ing MOTHER her kid, and demands that she answer to a Social Worker because, of course, a Social Worker knows better your child's needs than you.

Power to those mothers denying the stupid system. The shame is not theirs. It is ours. For instance, Christianity validates poverty. Christianity's doctrine is rooted in powerlessness, gender discrimination, "god-willing" ideology and manifest destiny thinking. Which as you know, benefit the white male.

I am glad you are coming into your powerful voice - you have A LOT to offer! I for one love that you speak out on poverty, welfare and women. Although I have never been a welfare recipient I have only once made about poverty level wages - and that was with unemployment benefits! I have felt shame in being poor and we shouldn't feel that way at all. It is sad how the dominate culture squeezes unique individuals in poverty and shame for being who they are. But we are rising above and doing great! I see improvements in both of us in the past few years. Do you feel this?Ajijaakhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14328347379621837240noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7795917756493447584.post-14785842450278640002010-04-30T08:32:23.101-07:002010-04-30T08:32:23.101-07:00Thanks so much! It feels so amazing to finally come into my powerful voice.

Poverty and colonization are bed buddies. The same stigma that is used on welfare moms is used to define the "3rd world", that they are just not trying hard enough to pull themselves up by their own bootstraps. The rich will totally rationalize all poverty so that they don't assume any guilt. Hopefully, we can start changing that!Sloth Womynhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12334700336578451488noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7795917756493447584.post-19086626690660031402010-04-29T22:36:15.473-07:002010-04-29T22:36:15.473-07:00Awesome, awesome, awesome! It is true that poverty is a form of violence. I would like to add that poverty is also a form of colonization to annihilate a people.Ajijaakhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14328347379621837240noreply@blogger.com
